Basis levels were somewhat defensive for white wheat but firm on hard red winter and dark northern spring. Export bids for spot deliveries of ordinary protein white wheat remain difficult to define with buyers jockeying bids for lower protein. Shipments...Weekly export inspections showed a much-improved week for wheat shipments off US ports, coming in at nearly 24 mb and well above the pace needed to meet current USDA projections. Year-to-date shipments now stand 21% behind last year at 227 mb. Top shipper was soft red winter with 7.7 mb, followed by hard red spring with 6.6 mb and hard red winter coming in at 4.9 mb for the week. Soft white loaded 2.8 mb off the west coast. Crop Progress...A recent round of precipitation opened-up winter wheat plantings across the PNW, with several states now slightly ahead of the five-year average pace. Washington stands 41% planted, Idaho at 17% and Montana at 18%, all slightly ahead of average, while Oregon is starting out slightly behind average at 5% planted. -Norm Ruhoff Contributing Analyst Copyright 2015 DTN/Telvent.
