DTN Closing Livestock Comment 10/14 16:04 Beef Futures Settled Mixed With Nearbys Gaining on Deferreds The cattle complex closed on a mixed basis tied in large part to bull-spreading interest. On the other hand, hog futures settled mostly lower with only expiring October some higher on the close. By John Harrington DTN Livestock Analyst GENERAL COMMENTS: Packer buying interest in cattle country seemed fairly decent for a Wednesday. Yet their activity was more in terms of tire kicking than actual bids. Asking prices were not well defined with some showlists in the South priced around $135. According to the closing report, the Iowa hog base is $0.44 lower compared with the Prior Day settlement ($66.00-$73.00, weighted average $72.12). Corn futures slumped a nickel plus lower, pressured by harvest progress in the bean trade. Disappointing earnings at Wal-Mart and Boeing caused the stock market to struggle. The Dow closed 157 points lower and the Nasdaq lost 13.
