DTN Early Word Grains 02/29 06:00 Leap Day in Name Only May corn was 2 cents higher, May soybeans were 1 cent lower, and May Chicago wheat was 3 cents higher. By Darin Newsom DTN Senior Analyst 6:00 a.m. CME Globex: May corn was 2 cents higher, May soybeans were 1 cent lower, and May Chicago wheat was 3 cents higher. CME Globex Recap: Grains may not have leapt, but held their mostly higher open to the overnight session through early Monday morning (February 29). The soybean complex remained under pressure though trade interest was light. Outside markets were mixed with gold and the U.S. dollar index higher and crude oil and DJIA futures lower. OUTSIDE MARKETS: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 57.32 points lower at 16,639.97, the NASDAQ Composite was up 8.26 points at 4,590.47, and the S&P 500 fell 3.65 points to close at 1,948.05 Friday. DJIA futures were 87 points lower overnight. Asian markets were mostly lower with the Nikkei down 161.65 points (1.0%) while China's Shanghai Composite fell 79.23 points (2.9%). European markets were also mostly lower with London's FTSE 100 down 39.13 points (0.6%). The U.S. dollar index was 0.129 higher at 98.277. Crude oil was down $0.17 at $32.61 while Brent crude rallied $0.19 to $35.29. April gold was $14.50 higher at $1,234.90. China's Dalian soybean futures were lower while Malaysian palm oil futures were higher.
