DTN Early Word Opening Livestock 09/20 06:04 Lean Hog Issues Likely to Open Lower Hog futures seem set to open moderately lower, pressured by follow-through liquidation and further long liquidation. On the other hand, look for the cattle complex to begin with mixed price action Tuesday thanks to a slow combination of residual selling and short-covering. By John Harrington DTN Livestock Analyst Cattle: Steady-$2 HR Futures: Mixed Live Equiv $126.67 - .05* Hogs: Steady-$1 LR Futures: 10-30 LR Lean Equiv $ 85.51 - .07** * based on formula estimating live cattle equivalent of gross packer revenue ** based on formula estimating lean hog equivalent of gross packer revenue GENERAL COMMENTS: The cash cattle trade will no doubt remain in slow gear Tuesday with both bids and asking prices poorly defined. We expect feedlot managers to eventually price ready steers and heifers sharply higher. Significant trade volume may not surface until Thursday or Friday. Live and feeder futures are staged to open on a mixed basis tied to spillover selling on one hand and short-covering on the other.
