CME GLOBEX RECAP: World equity markets are starting this week the way they finished last week, with most markets continuing to move lower. Higher market-based interest rates continue to be one of the drivers, with the 10-year note now trading above 5.0% in overnight trade. This week's focus will be split between earnings reports, the search for a Speaker of the House in Washington, and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Regarding earnings, over 30% of the S&P 500 will be reporting this week and we will get high-profile earnings from Meta and Alphabet. In Washington, there are 9 candidates vying for speaker and there is little consensus as to how that situation will resolve itself. In Israel, it has been over two weeks since Hamas committed the atrocities but the ground war that has been expected has not yet begun. There have been significant diplomatic discussions aimed at reducing the impact on Palestinian residents in Gaza and that has provided at least some hope that this war doesn't escalate. That in turn has weighed on energy prices on Friday and again Monday morning. OUTSIDE MARKETS: Previous closes Friday showed the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 286.89 at 33,127.28 and the S&P 500 down 53.84 at 4,224.16, The 10-Year Treasury yield ended at 4.92%.
