OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of June 16. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.dtnpf.com. Note that all report release times are Central Daylight Time (CDT) unless otherwise noted.
1. The sneakiest soybean pest: This week we'll carry a series of stories on soybean cyst nematodes (SCN), which are present over most of the Corn Belt. The only quick protection is SCN-resistant seed, and that's not always available. New traits are on the horizon, and there are other tools against this yield stealer that many farmers don't even know they have. Watch for the "Stomp on SCN Yield Losses" banner. 2. Here comes the heat: While some areas of the country have already had unseasonably high temps, the first widespread hot spell is pushing into the center and south of the country for the week. Some areas could see their first 100-degree days of the season. The heat and humidity will likely spawn more scattered storms, such as it did on the weekend, and may temporarily temper the temperatures, but heat will likely build back.
3. Markets closed Wednesday: Wednesday is the federal Juneteenth holiday, U.S. stock and commodity markets will not be trading and the DTN newsroom will be closed, except for some markets coverage for our Canadian customers. DTN analysis will resume Thursday morning with our Early Word commentary, when markets will operate during normal times. Our daily videos will also resume at their normal times on Thursday.
4. Catch latest Progressive Farmer: The June issue of the Progressive Farmer magazine has been in mailboxes for a few days. The issue is also now available online here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….
5. Economic reports to watch: Monday reports start at 7:30 a.m. with the Empire Manufacturing Survey. At 10 a.m. we'll have Grain Inspections numbers, followed at 3 p.m. with the weekly USDA NASS Crop Progress report. We're also expecting the soybean crush estimates from the National Oilseeds Processors Association. Tuesday is a busy report day, with the 7:30 a.m. release of U.S. Retail Sales, the 8:15 a.m. reveal of Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization and 9 a.m. Business Inventory numbers. At 2 p.m. we'll see the ERS Livestock, Dairy and Poultry outlooks. Wednesday, as noted, is the Juneteenth market holiday. At 9 a.m. there will be a release of the Homebuilders Confidence Index. No other reports are scheduled. Thursday reports resume with the 7:30 a.m. Grain Export Sales, Initial Jobless Claims, Housing Starts and Building Permits reports. At 10:30 a.m. we'll see the Weekly Economic Index, followed by the 2 p.m. release of Broiler Hatchery and Livestock Slaughter reports. Friday sees the 8:45 a.m. release of the S&P Services and Manufacturing PMI and the 9 a.m. reveal of Existing Home Sales and Leading Economic Indicators. At 2 p.m. we'll have the Cattle On Feed report, and CFTC Commitment of Traders report at 2:30 p.m.
