OMAHA (DTN) -- The Farm Service Agency on Monday reported 4.72 million prevented-planting acres nationally, up 1.14 million acres from a year ago.
FSA's first Crop Acreage report for the 2024-25 crop year showed farmers reported 89.1 million acres of corn planted along with 86 million acres of soybeans and 49.7 million acres of wheat.
That compares with the August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE), which estimated 90.7 million planted acres of corn, 87.1 million acres of soybeans, and 46.3 million acres of wheat.
FSA planted acres always contrasts somewhat with acreage reported by the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. In some cases, the difference is because the WASDE takes into account acreage from farmers not involved in FSA programs.
PREVENTED PLANTING ACRES
When it comes to prevented-planting acres, farmers reported 2.67 million acres of corn that went unplanted and 774,962 acres of soybeans.
While prevented-planting acres were higher than the 2023 planting season, those acres came in lower than 2022, (6.39 ma) 2020 (10.2 ma) and the 2019 (19.6 ma) crop years. In 2021, farmers reported just 2 million prevented planting acres.
The lost acreage reflects heavy storm events that separately hit farmers in northern and southern states.
States with the highest reported prevented planting acres: North Dakota 858,033; South Dakota 571,418; Minnesota 450,985; Arkansas 442,664; Louisiana 343,425; Texas 329,271; Mississippi 245,164; Wisconsin 209,215.
