Top 5 Things to Watch

18 Aug 2024

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of August 18. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.dtnpf.com. Note that all report release times are Central Daylight Time unless otherwise noted.

1. Trust in Numbers: We'll continue to track the 2024 corn and soybean crops, following record or near record yield predictions from USDA and our own DTN DTN Digital Yield Tour. Monday afternoon we'll have the latest USDA Crop progress report, serving up another piece of the crop condition data pie. If you missed last week's Yield Tour numbers, go here: https://www.dtnpf.com/…

2. Webinar Features Weather and Market Outlooks: August 20 is the latest DTN Ag Summit Series Webinar, focusing on weather and markets expectations heading into harvest. The free webinar runs 9-11 a.m. Registering also allows you access to a full recording of the webinar, in case you miss a portion or want to share the details with others in your operation. DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick will cover "Where Did La Nina Go? Its impact on the Long-Range Forecast." He'll be followed by DTN Lead Analyst Todd Hultman, who'll discuss "Grain Market Outlook: Farmers and Funds Face Off on Price Direction." You can register right up to the time of the webinar. But why wait? Go here: https://www.dtn.com/…

3. Crop Weather for the Week: Temperatures in the U.S. Corn Belt will be mild, and it will be drier, with the Midwest particularly seeing conditions favorable for grain fill on corn and soybeans. In the southern Plains temperatures remain hot in Texas, milder farther north, but should be on a general increase next week. That could become stressful for crops, especially in areas that missed out on recent rains.

4. International Weather Grabs Attention: A few disturbances will move through the Canadian Prairies with scattered showers going through the week. This could hurt harvest and grain quality as wheat and canola mature. Attention continues to turn to South America as well, as another round of cold weather crosses Brazil after limited frosts in the far south of the country recently.

5. Economic Reports This Week: On Monday we'll see the 9 a.m. release of U.S. Leading Economic Indicators. At 10 a.m. the latest Grain Inspections numbers are out, followed by the 3 p.m. release of the USDA Crop Progress report. Tuesday there are no government or economic reports planned. Wednesday starts at 9:30 a.m. with EIA's Weekly Petroleum Status, including ethanol. At 1 p.m. the minutes of Federal Reserve FOMC meeting are released. At 2 p.m. USDA releases Broiler Hatchery and Milk Production data. Thursday sees the 7:30 a.m. release of Grain Export Sales and Initial Jobless Claims figures. At 8:45 a.m. we'll see S&P Services and Manufacturing PMIs, then Existing Home Sales figures at 9 a.m. The 2 p.m. reports include Livestock Slaughter, Chicken and Eggs and County Estimates of Cash Rent. Friday, Fed Chairman Powell's speech from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, begins at 9 a.m. That's also when the latest New Home Sales numbers are released.
