OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Sept. 1. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

1. Markets closed for Labor Day: Markets are closed Monday, as are the DTN offices, although we will post some new stories Sunday and Monday. Our daily weather and market videos will resume Wednesday. Our weekend market updates for DTN subscribers will go out Monday evening, instead of normal Sunday evening, and coverage will resume as normal Tuesday morning. 2. COVID, avian influenza and other illnesses: These conditions are on the upswing. We've of course been tracking the spread of H5N1 avian influenza through the fair and livestock show season; we're now also hearing about more COVID outbreaks in humans in rural areas. 3. Crop weather: The Midwest should be clearer and somewhat cooler following scattered weekend showers. Another front will come through mid to late next week, but not much rain is forecast. In Texas and the Southern Plains, temperatures should drop significantly behind the latest front, with mild conditions through the week. More rain for the Canadian Prairies is expected with the potential for severe weather that may damage mature wheat, canola, and other crops awaiting harvest.
4. Brazil watch: Extremely dry conditions continue in northern and central Brazil, hurting prospects for full-season corn planting. Southern areas also saw very cold conditions move into wheat areas. Argentina is also seeing limited rain and cold weather as planting begins in the Southern Hemisphere. See the latest blog about South America at https://www.dtnpf.com/….
5. Economic reports line-up: Monday markets are closed for Labor Day holiday in the U.S., and Labour Day in Canada. Tuesday reports begin at 8:45 a.m. with the S&P Manufacturing PMI followed by latest construction spending numbers at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m. we'll see Grain Inspections, the 2 p.m. release of Fats and Oils report and Grain Crushings, then the weekly USDA NASS Crop Progress report at 3 p.m., which includes our analysis of that report. Wednesday we'll see U.S. Trade Deficit numbers at 7:30 a.m., with latest Job Openings and Factory Orders reports at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m. Broiler Hatchery numbers are out. Thursday is heavy on employment numbers, with 7:15 a.m. release of ADP Employment report, the 7:30 a.m. Initial Jobless Claims and U.S. Quarter 2 Productivity reports, and the 8:45 a.m. release of S&P U.S. Services PMI. At 10 a.m. EIA's Weekly Petroleum Status, including ethanol, report is due, followed by 11 a.m. release of Livestock and Meat International Data. Friday we'll see Grain Export Sales figures at 7:30 a.m. and the U.S. employment report, unemployment rate and hourly wages figures. At 2 p.m. we'll see latest Dairy Products and U.S. Ag Trade Data, followed by 2:30 p.m. CFTC Commitment of Traders report.
