USDA Cattle on Feed Report Preview
19 Dec 2024
OMAHA (DTN) -- Friday's Dec. 1 USDA Cattle on Feed report will likely showcase supportive data for the cattle complex, as all three divisions -- on-feed, placed and marketed -- are expected to be lighter than a year ago.
It will be especially interesting to see how much the placement data is affected. We know that not only are seasonal dynamics coming into play with the lower projected figure, as cattle were placed earlier this year because cow-calf producers wanted to market their calves early to take advantage of the market's strong prices, but also that all cattle imports from Mexico have been restricted since Nov. 25 due to the positive detection of New World screwworm in a cow in extreme southern Mexico.
The report will likely be seen as bullish, but given that next week is a holiday-shortened week for Christmas, the report's effect on the market will likely be limited.
USDA will release its Dec. 1 Cattle on Feed report at 2 p.m. CST on Friday.
