Top 5 Things to Watch

5 Jan 2025

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Jan. 5. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

Note that all report release times are Central Standard Time unless otherwise noted.

1. January WASDE: The much-anticipated USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) and Crop Production reports hit at 11 a.m. on Jan. 10; we'll provide the details moments later and updates and analysis throughout the day. The January report also includes Grain Stocks and Winter Wheat and Canola Seeding and Cotton Ginnings data. This is the month USDA releases "final" production numbers from 2024 harvest, and a lot of other commodity data. Of keen interest will be USDA's predictions on the South American production season, given the mix of weather in Brazil and Argentina. Our preview of the report will be out mid-week. Our traditional webinar, featuring analysis by DTN Lead Analyst Rhett Montgomery, is at 12:30 p.m. Friday. To register for the free report, go here: https://www.dtn.com/…

2. Best Young Farmers and Ranchers: We'll begin featuring stories on this year's class of the DTN/Progressive Farmer Best Young Farmers and Ranchers. Progressive Farmer magazine readers can also see full features on these outstanding producers in the January issue, or find them online here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….

3. Animal indemnities: USDA has some new rules on payouts for animal health issues such as H5N1 Avian influenza. We'll look at the details of these and other policy nuances.

4. Backside of the storm: With the snow, ice and winds predicted for the northern and central Midwest, we'll watch how this system hits travel and outdoor work, livestock and its potential for power outages. Freezing conditions are expected on the backside as far south as Louisiana. A good time to keep the generators fueled and ready.

5. Economic reports to watch: Monday, at 9 a.m. we'll see the latest Factory Orders data, with Grain Inspections numbers at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m. Dairy Products data is out, followed by the holiday-delayed CFTC Commitment of Traders report at 2:30. Tuesday reports begin at 7:30 a.m. with U.S. Trade Deficit figures and the 9 a.m. release of Job Openings data. Wednesday we'll see ADP Employment data at 7:15 a.m. At 1 p.m. we'll see the release of the latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes. At 2 p.m. we'll see Consumer Credit and Broiler Hatchery numbers. Thursday starts with 7:30 a.m. release of Grain Export Sales and Initial Jobless Claims reports.
