OMAHA (DTN) -- Sorghum, cotton and rice planting are ahead of last year's pace, but barley and oats are slightly behind, according to USDA's weekly Crop Progress report issued Tuesday.

For the week ended April 3, 2016, sorghum was 13% planted, compared to 8% last year and a 13% five-year average. Cotton planting was 3% complete, compared to 2% last year and a 5% average. Rice was 16% planted, compared to 13% last year and a 7% average.

Oats were 29% planted as of April 3, compared to 31% last year and a 35% average. Emergence was at 24%, compared to 25% last year and a 29% average.

Barley was 24% planted, compared to 25% last year and a 29% average.

Only 7% of the winter wheat crop is rated poor to very poor, compared to 16% at this time last year. Fifty-nine percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

"USDA said that 59% of winter wheat was rated good-to-excellent, resulting in an 8-point increase in the DTN Winter Wheat Condition Index to 154," said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. "DTN's index is also up from 115 a year ago and above the five-year average of 93. Tuesday's report is bearish for wheat."
