Trade remains generally quiet as farmer attention has shifted to spring field work as weather allows. An unusually wet spring across the Pacific Northwest has plantings running about a week or more behind the average pace. Weekly Sales...USDA reported U.S. wheat demand declined from the prior two weeks, coming in right at the four-week average. Weekly sales of 15.5 mb put year-to-date commitments at 1 billion bushels which is 41% ahead of a year ago and 8% above the five-year average pace for early April. Hard red winter was top seller with 7.6 mb, placing total sales at 414 mb which is more than double a year ago and 28% above average. Hard red spring saw 4.1 mb in new demand, putting current year commitments at 308 mb which is 31% above last year and 27% ahead of average. Soft white sales came in at 1.9 mb for a year-to-date total of 172 mb that stands 28% ahead of a year ago and 5% above average. Top Buyers...China was notable as the top buyer last week, securing a total of 4.1 mb of both soft white and red spring wheat. Nigeria bought 3.6 mb of hard red winter, followed by Japan with 2.4 mb, Sudan with 2 mb of hard red winter and Chile with 1.2 mb of hard red winter and springs. -Norm Ruhoff Contributing Analyst Copyright 2017 DTN/Telvent.
