Top 5 Things to Watch

22 Oct 2023

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Oct. 22. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

1. Ongoing Speaker saga: With Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, losing his spot as the GOP nominee to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives, focus will be on the next moves by the majority party and the repercussions of those moves, successful or not. The clock is ticking on support for conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as subjects closer to home such as a Farm Bill debate and once-again impending government shutdown. Our DTN Ag Policy Editor Chris Clayton, DTN Political Correspondent Jerry Hagstrom and others will attempt to stay on top of the twists and turns and what they mean for farmers and agribusinesses. Keep tabs on the latest from Clayton's Ag Policy Blog, found here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….

2. Weather turns wet: Mostly dry conditions for the weekend should help farmers who are wrapping up harvest and doing fall fieldwork. Things turn more active next week with growing confidence that widespread rainfall will develop across the Plains as a series of low-pressure systems move through the region. Rainfall could be heavy when those low-pressure systems cross paths with tropical moisture coming up from the remnants of Hurricane Norma.

3. Wheat yield winners: Monday we'll have the state and national winners from the National Wheat Foundation 2023 National Wheat Yield Contest. We'll have overall results as well as a series of feature stories on some of the top winners in each category. Now in its eighth year, the NWF's yield contest is designed to encourage wheat growers to strive for high yield, quality and profit while trying new and innovative management strategies. DTN/Progressive Farmer is the official media outlet of the competition. Contest partners include: John Deere, WestBred, BASF, U.S. Wheat Associates, Croplan, Eastman, The McGregor Companies, AgriMaxx, Ardent Mills, BushelFarm, Dyna-Gro, GrainSense, Limagrain Cereal Seeds, Mennel, North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association, Ohio Corn&Wheat, PlainsGold, UniSouth Genetics, UPL, Grain Craft, Grow Pro, Kansas Wheat, Michigan Wheat, Miller Milling, North Dakota Mill, and Northern Crops Institute.

4. Bird Flu found in Iowa: On Oct. 20, Iowa officials confirmed a positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Buena Vista County, Iowa. The disease was found in a commercial turkey flock, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. We'll watch for further news throughout the week.
