Northern dressed deals had a range of $292 to $296, mostly $295, $1 higher than the prior week's weighted averages. Southern live trade did not start up until Friday and most sales were done at $184, $2 higher than the previous week's weighted averages. According to Thursday's Daily Direct Slaughter Cattle Negotiated Purchase Summary reports, weekly accumulated totals were as follows, (the prior week's weighted averages are listed in parentheses). KS $NA($182.03); NE $294.63($294.17); TX $NA($181.91); IA $294.62($294.85); CO not available due to confidentiality. Southern weighted averages were not available due to the late week trade. The Friday Afternoon Daily Direct Slaughter Cattle report lists week-to-date trade volume totals as: KS 7,996; NE 22,359; TX 2,100; IA 28,812; CO NA due to confidentiality. Friday's slaughter totaled 119,000 head, 6,000 greater than the prior week, and 2,000 head more than a year ago. Saturday's kill was estimated at 20,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 619,000 head, 6,000 above the previous week, but 2,000 less than 2023. The weekly averages for boxed beef cutouts and boxed beef cuts: choice $294.51(-2.12), select $288.77(- 1.91), with an average choice select spread of $5.74(-0.20), and a total load count including cuts, trimmings, and grinds of 661(+17). Changes from the prior week are listed in parentheses. For the week ending April 27, 2024, Imported Beef Passed for Entry in the U.S. totaled 49,836, 102.60% of the previous week and 102.00% of the 4-week average. DTN MORNING COMMENTS: As both packers and producers are busy preparing for the week ahead, it should be a typically quiet Monday with bids and asking prices not established. Significant trade volume will likely be delayed until the second half of the week. Beef cutouts are expected to be mixed with generally light box movement.
